How do you tell the best web hosting companies from the worst? Certainly not by advertising. Some of the best advertising promotes some of the worst companies!
The supposed "best" web hosting companies, as proclaimed on so many web sites, are the ones that have the highest conversion rates or the highest sales commissions. In other words, they're the
ones that make the site owners the most money. They are NOT the ones that are the best for YOU. They're the ones that are the best for THEM.
What Makes A Web Hosting Company The Best, Or The Worst?
I once worked for a guy who inherited a thriving business from his father. But unlike his father, he didn't care about his customers, his employees, or anybody else. He was focused on how much
money he could get out of the busines today, and didn't seem to care about tomorrow.
He didn't want to repair the equipment - that costs money. Nor did he care to properly service his customers.
He drove the business right into the ground, then couldn't understand why the money stopped pouring in.
A lot of web hosting companies seem to be the same way. Although they put money into advertising, they don't take care of the customers they attract. They focus on profits, and nothing else.
They end up earning an UNSATISFACTORY (or worse) rating with the Better Business Bureau.
So how do you improve your chances of finding a good web hosting service - one you'll be happy with? By only considering the ones that have earned a good BBB rating. It's just that simple.
"Top Ten" Sites - Are They Honest? Or Do They List The Worst Web Hosts Among The Best?
6/21/08
I spent most of this day online. I entered the search term "top web hosting" in Google. I was looking for any site that had a top ten list. As I found each one, I checked the listed web hosting
companies to see how the Better Business Bureau rated them.
Of the 22 top ten lists I found, 21 of them listed companies rated as UNSATISFACTORY! Some of them listed 2 or even 3 such companies!
So how honest are they being when they tell you that such companies are your best choices?
Update
7/28/08
I had a table in this spot that showed which sites I visited, which web hosting companies they advertised, how they rated them, and how the BBB rated them. But some of the sites have since
rearranged their lists.
And something else has changed since then. StartLogic's BBB rating has improved from "Unsatisfactory" to "No Rating". It seems they've been making efforts to improve their reputation.
This is especially interesting to me since StartLogic used to host all of my sites. I've moved most of them to Lunarpages. But since moving web sites is a hassel (and StartLogic didn't make it
easy) I still have 2 sites hosted there.
I have a long, long list of problems I've had with StartLogic over the years. In some ways they've improved. But not enough to where I'd recommend them.
The last time I called their technical support, I was connected to someone in the Philippines. When I got her to understand the problem, she said she'd forward it to "Level Two" (not the call;
I didn't get to talk to an actual technical support person). She said she'd put a rush on it since it was a serious problem (my domains had been hijacked). And it was taken care of the next day.
Tecnical support shouldn't work that way. When I call Lunarpages with a problem, I talk to someone who takes care of the problem on the spot. Perhaps that's one of the reasons why
Lunarpages is rated
"A" by the Better Business Bureau (not by me; I don't do ratings).
Back To The "Rating" Sites
Why don't they care about their visitors? Why do they promote web hosting companies that don't make the grade? They must know how lousy some of those companies are. Yet they give them glowing reviews.
Why can't they see past today's profits?
I sincerely hope they either change their ways, or crash and burn.
